Culture in Nashville

The Adventure Science Museum

We often saw the pyramid to the Adventure Science Museum light up in bright, fluorescent colors at night as we would drive by.  When we learned that we were moving away from Nashville, I insisted that we visit the museum so we could finally see what was on the inside.  We beheld amazing planet exhibits and fun hands on science experiments alike.  Most thrilling, though, was the simulated space bounce. What a fun experience!  If you want to see the best cityscape of Nashville, head on up to the Subway Restaurant on the second floor.  The view is breathtaking.

Blue Bird Café

Looking for an authentic Nashville music experience?  Look no further than The Blue Bird Café.  Their food is nice, but what you’ll really be there for is the legendary songwriter’s circle. Many people have started their careers here, including a certain man by the name of Garth Brooks. The experience of hearing writers sing songs that big names have made famous is second to none.  It’s not uncommon for country music legends make appearances as well.   Get your tickets and take a seat for one of the most memorable nights of your life.

The Grand Ole Opry

It sure would be a shame if you made it all the way to Music City and didn’t make it to The Grand Ole Opry.    You at least have to stop by.  But mostly, you need to enjoy a show. Get ready to say, “Howdyyyyyyyy!” back to the Minnie Pearl look a like as she kicks things off. Now, this isn’t your typical concert. It’s actually a live radio show that has been airing for decades.  Each act typically performs 2-3 songs.  You’ll hear old timers and current chart toppers alike.  At the end of the night, you’ll take a little piece of history home with you as you can tell your grandkids that yes, you made it to a Grand Ole Opry Show.

Schermerhorn Symphony Center

Music City isn’t just about Country Music.  Stick around long enough, and you’ll find representations from just about all styles.  I must say that this is one of the most gorgeous buildings in the whole city.  My husband photographed a wedding here that was worth drooling over. While their symphony is superb, they do host a variety of shows.  Once, we went to a benefit concert for Africa hosted by Big Kenny of Big &Rich with a line up that included The African Children’s Choir, Jars of Clay, Faith Hill, Dierks Bentley, Keith Urban, Mac Powell of Third Day, and Brad Arnold of Three Doors Down.  We ordered our tickets late, but our cheap seats were the best in the house! We sat in the balcony just behind the stage and ended up being the back up choir for Mac Powell! Swing on by for a lovely evening in this gorgeous hall.

The Frist Center

This fine museum boasts many travelling collections.  I have seen exhibits here, which include photographs from the raising of the flag at Iwo Jima, Couture Wardrobe pieces which hosted a blue cape identical to the one that Audrey Hepburn wore in Funny Face and many other lovely dresses, Impressionism, Renaissance Paintings, and some of Chihuly’s glass sculptures. This is a wonderful place to take children. In fact, I even purchased a yearly membership for myself, so I could take some of the kids (18 and under are free) that I babysat on hot summer days to have hands on art experiences in their Martin ArtQuest Gallery. Check their website for current exhibitions.
